Color blindness occurs when there is a problem with the granules (pigments ) that perceive color in certain neurons of the eye, called cones . These cells are found in the retina , the layer of light-sensitive lining the back of the eye tissue.

If you only need a pigment , you may have difficulty distinguishing between red and green , which is the most common type of color blindness. If you go to a different pigment , you may have trouble seeing the blue and yellow colors. People with color blindness to the blue and yellow colors usually have problems identify reds and greens .

The most severe form of color blindness is achromatopsia . The person with this rare condition can not see any color, so all you see in shades of gray. Color blindness is often associated with lazy eye , nystagmus (small , jerky eye movements ), severe photosensitivity and extremely poor vision.

Most color blindness is due to a genetic problem (see: sex-linked recessive gene ) . Very few women are color-blind and about 1 in 10 men suffer from some form of color blindness.

The drug hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil ) , used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases can also cause blindness.
